After years of use, your mattress may have finally reached the point of breakdown and is no longer comfortable to sleep on. Because of this, you may be looking around for a new mattress to buy. However, you may be overwhelmed with the many options, features, designs, and materials available and are unsure how to begin selecting your new mattress.
If so, you can begin by taking a deep look at your current mattress. With pen and paper in hand, ask yourself the questions below about your mattress so that you can narrow down what features you want your new one to have.
1. What Do You Love About Your Mattress That You Feel Contributes to a Good Night's Sleep?
On your sheet of paper, divide it up into two columns while using one for the first question. Ask yourself about what you love about your mattress that you feel has contributed to good nights' sleep in the past.
For example, you may love the thick pillow top that cushions and cradles your body while the firm mattress beneath the topper gives you extra support. You may also enjoy the moisture-wicking fabric that helps keep you cooler at night. Lay down on the bed if you need to, and write down every feature that you love about the mattress.
2. What Do You Despise About the Current Mattress That You Wish You Could Change to Make It More Comfortable?
After making a list of everything you love about your current mattress, the next thing you should do in the next column is to make note of everything you despise. These things are probably the ones that you have constantly complained about over the years that interfere with your comfort and a good night's sleep.
For example, while you may love the softness of the mattress, you may have hated being poked in the back by one of the springs. In this case, you may want to forget about buying a spring mattress and look for one made out of memory foam.
Once you have asked yourself the above questions and written out what you love and despise about your current mattress, the list will give you an overview of the features that you want in your new mattress. Take this list to a mattress store near you and show it to a sales representative so they can help you select the right one for you.
